College fest merchandise in India is procured by student-led fest committees at IITs, IIMs, NITs, BITS, IIITs, and state universities. Bulk production is the dominant model. Hoodies dominate winter-fest lineups (Mood Indigo, Saarang, Manfest); oversized tees and round-necks dominate cultural and tech fests across the rest of the calendar.
What fest committees typically order
The lineup follows the fest type, the season, and the budget tier. A few patterns recur across hundreds of campus orders:
Oversized Tees (180–240 GSM)
The campus default for cultural and tech fests. 180 GSM cotton sinker is the workhorse; 220 GSM French Terry is the premium oversized for IIM/IIT flagship fests where budget allows the heavier fabric tier.
Pullover Hoodies (300–430 GSM)
Winter-fest staple. 330 GSM cotton 3-thread fleece is the premium standard at IIT Bombay Mood Indigo, IIT Madras Saarang, and IIM Bangalore Unmaad. Cost-effective 350 GSM polycotton works for high-volume campus runs.
Polos & Round-Necks
Polos are core-team uniform at most fests — spun matty for cost-controlled runs, CP matty for premium core kits. Round-neck cotton sinkers are the cheapest path to printable fest merch.
How fest committees procure
The procurement window is the single most important variable. Lock the merch vendor early — anything tighter and either sample approval gets compressed (quality risk) or production runs hot (delivery risk). Tier-1 fests with large piece runs need a longer planning window than smaller fests.
The standard procurement sequence is straightforward: design brief → sample tee on one chosen base fabric → sample-approval call between committee and vendor → revised quote → bulk production → split-shipment to campus + dropship to distance students. Most committees ask for one sample before bulk; some IIM and IIT committees ask for two or three (different base fabrics) to compare hand feel before locking the order.
Production sequence
The full cycle for stock-fabric apparel — most fest orders use stock fabrics, since custom-developed fabric blocks add meaningful time:
Design phase: Files received. Sample tee dispatched.
Approval phase: Sample lands on campus. Approval call. Quote revision if needed.
Production phase: Bulk production (cutting → printing → stitching → QC). Sublimation runs faster than DTF on activewear.
Dispatch phase: Pan-India dispatch. Northeast routes (Guwahati, Shillong, Itanagar) take longer than metros.
Specific lead times confirmed in writing on every quote.
Print methods used
Three methods cover almost every fest order:
DTF (Direct-to-Film): The default for fest merch — sharp, full-colour, doesn't crack at the seams. Works on both cotton and polycotton. The standard for oversized tees and round-necks.
Sublimation: Used on polyester activewear and jersey kits. Locks the design into the fabric — zero peel risk, infinite colour fidelity.
Embroidery: For polos and core-team merch where committees want a permanent, premium finish. Standard for "CORE MEMBER" or "ORGANISER" labels on the chest.
